In 2013 I graduated university with a specialty in accounting. At the same time my mom was going through an equity refinance, and her credit union of 20 years charged her a $10,000 penalty on a $180,000 mortgage. Not because she was leaving, just because they could.
When I learned there are other lenders that either charge more modest penalties or rebate a portion to returning clients, I knew what path my career could take. I got my license to become a mortgage broker and help others avoid the same problem.
After several weeks of cold-calls to dozens of mortgage companies, I found an entry level job as a mortgage assistant. Things started small - I'd schedule calls, sort paperwork, and prepare applications as an underwriter. I kept learning the job and saving my money, eventually investing to become an equity partner in the company that gave me a chance.
The company grew, eventually partnering with three other similar sized companies. We merged to form Tango Financial, one of Canada's largest mortgage brokerages with over 500 agents.
After several years of working with amazing people and doing exciting projects, I decided it was the right time to branch out on my own. In 2021 I sold my shares so I could build this site and focus on what I've always enjoyed most, working directly with clients.
